- As the father of three, Jonathan Payne has
enjoyed years of perfecting his craft. The challenge of capturing
the ever-changing expressions, moods and reactions of children
offers endless opportunities to experiment, learn new techniques
and push the envelope of what today’s professional camera
equipment can achieve.

For this photographer, what is especially rewarding about
photographing children and their families is the timeless quality
of the final product. Jonathan has had clients come back to him
years later to remark how much more they enjoy the images as their
children grow and change. For Jonathan’s clients, choosing high
quality photography, often on an annual basis, is the perfect way
to document the fleeting moments of childhood.
- Preferring to shoot in natural light, Jonathan
works outdoors and in client homes with children as young as a few
days old up through teenagers and their parents. He has found that
when children are in familiar settings they are more likely to
relax and enjoy the session, ultimately setting the stage for
perfect images that reflect both the beauty of each child and
their active engagement with the world around them.

In reflecting on why he loves his work so much, Jonathan says,
“Children aren’t self-conscious like adults are. They express
their true feelings, they play, they respond. The interactions are
so pure. I never tire of photographing children.”
-
- More and more, Jonathan travels to clients
outside of California who have seen his images and desire his
artistic expertise. “Photographing clients in different regions of
the country enables me to keep the work fresh and to challenge my
ability to capture children in all sorts of settings.”
Jonathan lives with his wife and three children in Oakland,
California.
- Editorial Comment: When you look
at the photography of Jonathan Payne, it is as though you are
peeking into the life of these children. It is their
everyday; it is honest and real. He presents a great
example of what has become known as "lifestyle" portraiture.
From his work, you can see that a portrait of a child does not
have to be traditional to be beautiful. We love to see
vision such as his, he is truly an artist in our field.
